What do chiropractors do?
Chiropractors are healthcare providers who hold specialized degrees and possess active licenses to practice. They focus on the impact the spine has on the overall health of the patient. When the spine is poorly aligned, our nervous system doesn’t work the way it should. That’s why it’s important to reduce pressure on neurological tissues by adjusting the spine. Physical manipulations of the spine reduce pain, while also increasing its mobility and integrity. Adjustments coupled with nutrition and fitness education can greatly improve a patient’s life and their overall well-being.

While chiropractors treat a plethora of ailments, there are certain things they cannot do, for example fix broken bones. If you’re suspecting a fracture, then get help immediately at the nearest hospital. And if you’re not sure whether consulting a chiropractor is right for you, please give us a call. We’ll gladly answer your questions and discuss any concerns you may have. If you decide to schedule a consultation, you will receive a detailed exam, imagining and a customized treatment plan.
What happens during the first visit?
Not understanding the whole process and not knowing how a visit with a chiropractor looks can add to your anxiety and thus increase your pain. It makes more sense, then, to learn more about your first visit.
The visit begins with a thorough review of your medical history. After filling out a detailed questionnaire, one of our doctors will discuss it with you, making notes and asking follow up questions. Patients are often asked about their dietary and fitness habits, sleeping patterns and pain.
Once the discussion is concluded, it’s time for a physical exam. Your chiropractor will check your flexibility, range of motion and reflexes, evaluate your posture and muscle strength, and check for any joint misalignments. X-rays of various parts of your spine may be ordered. The idea behind the exam is to get a whole picture of the patient being treated so that only the best treatment options can be provided.
Either on your first or second visit, you will get your first spinal adjustment, during which you will lay down on a padded table, while the doctor will manually realign your spine. They may use a small device called an activator. This treatment is often accompanied by various popping and cracking noises. They are nothing to be afraid of!
Our skilled, experienced chiropractors at Achieve Health and Wellness are highly trained. They are gentle and always strive to keep their patients comfortable. They know over 150 techniques to properly align your spine.
Immediately after your first visit many patients experience physical and emotional relief. Obviously not everything will be better after just one visit, but many patients start to sense improvement early on in the treatment. Right after the first visits some patients experience soreness, fatigue, headaches or minor discomfort. These are fairly normal and will go away on their own as long as you stay hydrated. However, if you develop more serious symptoms such as swelling, pain, weakness or numbness, make sure you alert your chiropractor.
On another note, chiropractors do not believe in prescribing medications. They rely on the body’s wonderful ability to heal itself. They offer relaxation, meditation, hot/cold treatments, exercise, massages, nutrition counseling, ultrasounds, and bracing when necessary. The holistic, non-invasive chiropractic approach is focused on spinal manipulation and geared toward fulfilling individual patients’ needs.
How to become a chiropractor
Becoming a chiropractor requires commitment. Doctors in this field go to school for undergraduate and graduate studies (total of 8+ years). After passing national exams and applying for a state license, chiropractors can open their practice. Continuing education is required to maintain an active chiropractic license.
Are chiropractic adjustments painful?
Chiropractic adjustments aren’t usually painful. They may, however, cause soreness, headaches or fatigue. All of these symptoms should go away with rest and adequate fluid intake. Chiropractor’s goal is to reduce pain, not increase it. The adjustment procedure involves applying precise and controlled force to joints to realign them. This physical manipulation reduces pain and helps patients feel better.
