Who is a chiropractor?
A chiropractor is a licensed healthcare professional who performs physical adjustments of the spine manually. Chiropractors address a range of alignment issues that can cause pain and other symptoms. Their role is to diagnose, treat and manage various neuromuscular disorders, while also restoring the mobility and integrity of the spine by manually adjusting it. Chiropractors believe that biomechanical and structural derangements of the spine affect the entire nervous system in a negative way. They strive to reduce their patients’ pain and educate them about staying healthy by eating well, exercising and using different therapies.

Looking for a chiropactor? Look No Further!
Proper chiropractic care can help treat all the aforementioned conditions, and more!
While chiropractors address a range of health issues, they do not treat every condition. For example, if you suspect you have a fracture, contact your primary care doctor or go directly to the hospital.
You do not need to be in pain to visit a chiropractor. If you’re looking for a simple wellness visit, we will gladly work with you toward your optimal well-being. Chiropractic care is also about prevention and treating issues as soon as they arise, before they affect your body’s mobility.
If you’re still doubting if seeing a chiropractor is right for you, reach out to Achieve Health and Wellness, so we can discuss your concerns and answer all questions you may have. We can schedule you for an initial consultation. You’ll then be able to discuss your medical history in greater detail, get a physical exam and have imaging tests ordered. Based on the collected data, our chiropractors will make their recommendation and present you with your customized treatment plan.
What happens during an appointment with a chiropractor?
It is normal to feel slightly apprehensive the first time we’re seeing a doctor. However, at Achieve Health and Wellness we’ll do everything in our power to keep you calm and comfortable throughout your visit.
Your first visit will start with a detailed assessment. Upon completion of a thorough questionnaire, your medical history will be discussed. A chiropractor will ask you about the history of your pain (location, duration, severity), sleeping patterns, exercise routine and dietary habits. Knowing your needs better will help them design the best treatment plan for you. During the physical exam, the doctor will focus on your posture, test your muscle strength and mobility, look for misaligned joints, perform reflex analysis and range of motion testing. X-rays of various sections of your spine may be ordered as well.
Next comes the adjustments part. Once you lie down comfortably on the specialized table, the chiropractor will perform a soft tissue manipulation, or manually realign your spine. It is not painful or scary! If you feel worried, remember that chiropractors have been trained in over 150 techniques. They’re knowledgeable, gentle and responsive to your needs. During their manipulation you may hear popping and cracking sounds. Both of these are very normal.
After the first visit you may experience a slight headache, soreness, or fatigue. Many people, however, feel almost immediate relief. With every next treatment, you will notice more and more improvements in your health.
There are rare instances when your condition may worsen or new symptoms may appear. In those cases make sure to inform your chiropractor of any changes, good, bad or other.
Lastly, it’s important to note that chiropractors do not prescribe medication. Rather, they believe in a natural approach to healing. They use non-invasive spinal manipulations, relaxation techniques, stimulation, hot/cold treatments, fitness and diet counseling, massages, and more to better align your spine and improve the quality of your daily life.
How do you become a chiropractor?
You need to complete three years of undergraduate study and a four year program to receive a Doctor of Chiropractic degree. Then you need to pass the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners exam to obtain a state license to practice. During their studies, chiropractors learn anatomy and physiology, while practicing assessing patients and performing spinal adjustments in supervised settings. To keep their license active, chiropractors need to continue their education.
Is a chiropractic adjustment painful?
The short answer is no. A chiropractic adjustment is a non-invasive procedure that is usually not painful. During a manipulation a highly trained chiropractor uses their hands (or a specialized instrument) to apply precise and quick force on a joint to move it back into its place. Patients usually feel relieved after the procedure. Sometimes however, they can experience minor discomfort, soreness and fatigue that usually will resolve quickly.
